Amcorp Properties Berhad and Puan Shalina Azman jointly donate RM335,000 to rural schools in Sabah

(Kuala Lumpur 22 Oct 2018) – Amcorp Properties Berhad (“Amprop”) and its Chairman Puan Shalina Azman jointly donated RM335,000 to 3 rural school in the Pitas district in Kudat, Sabah as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (“CSR”) effort. The schools that benefited from the CSR project were Sekolah Kebangsaan Liu, Asrama Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Pitas II, Sekolah Kebangsaan Pandan Mandamai. Both Puan Shalina Azman, in her personal capacity and Amprop contributed in equal share towards the full donation sum.

The donation was in the form of school supplies and other amenities such as school bags, uniforms, stationeries, school shoes and socks for the children of the schools, new bunk beds complete with mattresses, pillows and bed linen sets. Other items were tables, chairs, lighting, ceiling and stand fans, book shelves and racks for the schools, including a water filtration system complete with water tank and pump for the hostel school. The water filtration system will help resolve the water issues faced by the hostel school as Pitas has had a long history of water problems and the schools have to resort to drawing water from nearby rivers to gain access to water. Such water issues have led to the children being at risk of kidney, skin and jaundice diseases. All the items were personally presented by Puan Shalina Azman to the schools during a site visit by her recently.

Pitas is the capital of the Pitas District in the Kudat Division of Sabah, Malaysia. Its population is made up predominantly of ethnic Kadazan-Dusun of Rungus and Orang Sungai descent, with a small number of Malaysian Chinese and other ethnic minorities. Sekolah Kebangsaan Liu, Pitas is located at Kg Liu Pitas, in Kota Maruda, in the district of Pitas, Sabah. It has a population of 13 teachers and 117 students. Asrama Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Pitas II is located at Kg Kusilad also in Kota Maruda. Its teaching faculty is around 75 teachers to a population of 853 students while Sekolah Kebangsaan Pandan Mandamai which is also situated in Kota Maruda, Pitas has 12 teachers and 153 students.

During the site visit, all 3 schools were found to be in deplorable condition with sinking classrooms, uneven building structures, broken doors and uncovered ceiling. Lessons have to be interrupted when rain falls. The schools’ canteens also had insufficient facility to cater to the needs of the school children. The school children were seen not wearing shoes, wearing torn school outfits and using broken school bags.

Puan Shalina Azman hopes this donation will alleviate some of the problems the schools are facing.

The wooden walls of the school cabins are broken and the classrooms are sinking due to the uneven flooring
Doors to school building broken but
school has no funds for repairs

Uncovered ceiling causing interruptions to lessons when rain falls
Insufficient school canteen/kitchen facility to meet school’s needs

School children seen in torn school outfits and were not wearing shoes as their parents couldn’t afford them
Many of the school children were using broken school bags to carry their books and stationery
